When the villagers of Kleinschloss, Germany begin turning up dead due to blood loss the towns people suspect vampirism, Dr Otto Von Neimann examines the victims bodies and confirms the theory. Blame instantly falls on the village idiot, Herman Gleib, due to his fondness of bats. However, Detective Karl Brettschneider thinks differently. When Von Niermann’s maid Georgiana finds a crucifix in Emil Borst’s bedroom (Niermann’s lab assistant) she suddenly remembers also seeing muddy footprints in his room the morning after another victim was murdered, she becomes suspicious.
At the same time, a blood thirsty mob of villagers set to track down Herman in a bid to end the deaths of so many people, when they find him, he panics and falls off a ledge. To ensure he is dead the townspeople drive a stake through his heart. But as the murders continue they soon realize they, themselves have killed an innocent person.
